Modern Music Release Strategy and Planning | #86
Releases are the most important thing to get people to hear your music, and weather you’re an artist, or producer helping artists, you should listen to this to hear how you can make releases better.
There really is no “Perfect” way to release music, but this is some of our findings and different things to think about when it comes to planning your releases and promotional packages. Having been apart of many releases ourselves, we talk about what we’ve seen more success with, and what we’ve seen flop.
There’s lots to think about from planning to execution depending on what works for you and your audience!

In this episode, Jay Riehl and I discuss how that influences music creators and music listeners, and how you can't appeal to everyone. The only real north star of music creation is how you feel within yourself about what you're creating (and the feelings of the team involved) and you need to allow that to flourish. Did't work for me... plugin alliance and drumagog, a nightmare.
Ahh damn, yeah plug-in alliance is one of those large installers which makes it a bit harder. Drumagog is a strange one, very odd.
I love Modo Drums myself...its easy to work with and many different kits to choose from
I've never tried Modo drums yet, but i've heard people love it, that's super cool!!
Thnx a lot !!!! Very clear and to the point!! Question : When i choose Vocalign project 5 AU(ARA) in my logic pro 10.8.1 Rosetta It shows stereo not mono as it showed on your video and since I'm using a one voice track as my guide I 'm expecting to have the choice of mono as well .........by the way.. the .Vocalign project 5.AU gives me both stereo and dual/mono options . Any thoughts?
Glad it was helpful!! I was trying to look into your question and I am not sure what's going on there, that seems really strange!! Could be a really wierd bug or something, but not something I seem to find (Unfortunately I haven't had time to fire up Logic and look for myself on my end personally.) Hope it still works and gets the job done, will let you know if I find anything else out! So strange!!
My experience has been polar opposite to what your describing in terms of real vs AxeFx sim amp tone I bought a new axefx3 in the last 2 years it’s routed into any one of the Apollo x racks via toslink to spdif all digital and the functionality is great Fc12, Mission cc pedals I have a large collection of gear since I have been a session, live and touring live player since the late ‘70s So prior to protools or the first POD it was always mics, cabs, hardware pres, ect.. to tape obviously no interface this is a practice I still employ to this day for my best guitar sounds Royer 121, sen 609 and 906, sm58, md421, akg414, my Neumanns, a few others but the usual suspects Cabs are mostly Celestion green, cream, v type, red back, vintage 30s a-crossed Marshall A & B, Mesa full sized, 4x12 and 2x12 some older orange black back These days those cabs are miced up in my live room-mogami-wall mount Ethercon Jacks or xlr snakes to my control room drops-patchbay land- The bays allow me to choose any interface or D.I. On the preamp racks my favs are Neve Shelford channel, UA 610-710 TF and API, the shelfords and the apollos have hiz ins so they are available also and finally a Audient asp-880 for 8 channels of adat My monitors are currently powered Genelecs 8260A with 7060A sub and Focal twin6 Point of the list is to demonstrate that I have many higher end signal and sonic options when tracking, mixing and mastering my guitar takes I run Protools primarily as it is what I learned and was certified on since 6, I used 4 but learned 6 and up to current 2024 versions Studio One, Logic and Ableton are all used here Axe is easily selected from my input drop down and arm as spdif stereo or mon, easy peasy and you still have all of you analog ins I do have every radial box made along with the royer DI and the DIs on my pres for RE amp duties and big orange extc for pedals Now after boasting all my goods.. WHY CANT I GET A DECENT FRIGGIN SOUND FROM THE FRACTAL AHHHHH, ITS DRIVING ME INSANE,,,,ITS THIN FLAT DIGITAL TRIPE AND NOT ONE PRESET SOUNDS LINE ANY OF MY AMPS AHHHH Any help would be much appreciated, I tried the fractal forum but became frustrated as they told me to try what I already told them I was doing The Quad cortex and Kemper are lovely, talent that tracks here try their favs and no one uses the AxeFx after comparing Wondering if I got a lemon
Sorry to hear you can't get a good sound!! So strange, I love mine and have hardly any problem making a decent sound. On my website I do have my custom Cab IRs that I also use, and there is a free pack you could try as well to see if that helps? I have found their factory IRs to be a bit less then perfect, but still i haven't found it to be as bad as you're mentioning. Maybe there's something else strange going on? My question is what if you do it analog instead of via the digital to the apollo and see if that helps? I have found routing the apollo as an interface or anything to be a pain, so I like to not use it that way. Hope you can figure it out!!
@@ANAKCreates Thanks so I’ll give that a shot
DUDE. HOLY moly this was the video I was looking for. Such a good explanation of everything. Thank you so much for ending my 3 hour long search for which drum plug in to choose.
Awesome!! Glad you found it helpful!! :)
The kensington app has a posibility to add an option for the two lower buttons pressed simultaneously, the two upper simultaneously, etc. is there any way to do this in steermouse? Awesone video btw!
Yes!! In the Steermouse app it’s under the Chords tab, so you can do different combos of buttons together. Glad you enjoyed the video!
you can set-up an autohotkey script and force your pc to beep on the different frequencies with the keyboard shortcut pressed.
thanks mate , maybe the clearest explanation of vocallign running on Logic Pro , so far
Glad it was helpful!!
Does this work for streamyard?
It should work the same, Yupp!
Great video mate!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!!
Thanks for this shootout man! It's hard to find any actual sounds on the Wilkinson mod.
Awesome!! Thank you!! It’s a great mod, I really like it!! :)
Do you have a trick to listing only the UAD plugins that you own so you can delete the rest?
Unfortunately I don't know of a way to do that and get a nice list, they don't make that very easy as they want you to buy them haha wish I had some better news for ya!
Hi man. I watched halfway, and I was like he's not gonna do Ableton. Thankfully, I'm not completely stupid and just went to the same directory as you did. Cleaned it right out. Now I need to consider cleaning my apartment :( Thanks!
Awesome!! Glad it was helpful!! Same principle for most DAWs, just depends which plugin format they require. Unfortunately I can't help you with the apartment tho, i'd probably tell ya to buy more guitars or something... oops!! haha ;)
No one can ever tell you what’s best for you. Only you can ultimately make that decision. I personally love Addictive Drums!
Agreed! You have to choose for yourself. That’s awesome! I know many people who swear by it! :)
thanks
Glad it was helpful!!
As I understand it though, some plugins have more than one component or part. Do you have to move all parts or just the main plugin component?
You only really should need to move the main plugin component, and only the one for the DAW/Plugin format you are using. (Eg if you are using logic, no need to worry about the Avid AAX versions)
Cheers, thanks for taking the time to reply. @@ANAKCreates
its pleasant to sit around with you. I love your straight forwardness.
Thank you! Glad you enjoy!! :)
mf just casually skipped button 5678💀I just wanted to know what are those
I believe it's because the other buttons don't apply for the Kensington trackball, those are for other mice and trackballs that have even more buttons. Steermouse works with so many devices, but the Kensington only has 4 buttons.
I belive the buttons are when you combine your fore buttons. Im not sure tho. Its the only feature i cant find in my app
Holy fazoli
Oh wow, so it's AD2 hands down, eh?.. Thank you, this was very helpful!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Just what I was looking for! Thanks brother!
Awesome, Glad it helped! :)
Hey man very informative video here. I was wondering do i need to plug the axe fx into a seperate interface like what your doing or can i just use the axe fx ii as a interface via usb and get the same results? Do i need all these fancy preamps?
Awesome! Glad it was helpful! So no, you don't need all the facy preamps, just one on some interface will do, I have mine wired up more then probably needed, most of the time it's just one channel I record plus the DI. And yes, the Axe Fx can be used as a USB Interface of it's own, so you can record using that, it's just a bit of a routing pain to be able to hear the guitar you're recording and then what you're playback that you're monitoring at the same time. It's possible, but from my experience (they may have changed the software since I tried) it was a bit annoying. In retrospect, I think maybe if you use an aggrogate device (mac) and put your main interface and the axe fx toether in one device, you could easily use it as an input to hear, and then another way to listen to your speakers out. Hopefully that helps!
@@ANAKCreates thank you for getting back! Oh i know what you mean and know the way around that, i use 2 headrush 112s into my ax2 for my personal sound i hear, i can also use them as a playback after recording. Thanks for all the help
@@SauronSatan Awesome! That's great then!! No problem!!
This was a destined epiphany. You unlocked the code for my upcoming collaboration. I’m so used to feeling like I have to do everything because I have the skill. But I always end up burned out in the process. Thank you for reminding me that most times, we all go farther when we go together! 💫
Amazing! Glad it was helpful and a nice reminder for ya!! :) Very true!!
is this still the only way in 2024?
From my research so far, yes this is still the only solution for Faderport. It has changed a little bit since this video, but simply added a few new features.
You are a Godsend!
Glad it was helpful!!
Great concise explanation.
Thank you, glad it was helpful!
Quick and simple, thanks
Awesome, glad it was helpful!

Thank you!!!
Hello, I tried make a aggregate device like you showed in the video but in your video on the audio devices menu when u select the devices one mics showing as 2 inputs and the other ones showing as 1 video. But when i try to do the same thing my microphones are showing just 1 input on both of them. Can you please help me with this. Im using bumblebee neat microphones.
Hi! Let me see if I can help answer this - So some microphones will show up as 2 inputs, others will only be 1 input because technically each mic is mono anyway, so that is correct. Each mic should only have 1 input each which is fine, and may not have an output itself, depending on the mics (I am not totally sure about bumblebee, but I don’t think they have outputs maybe). So each one will be 1 input, which you can then add to the Afro gate device, and that’s good!
I would not suggest the older faderport unless you are working with an older system(yes, I miss the buttons to swap MIX and EDIT screens). With the FP2, using neyrinck's V-COntrol Pro makes a huge improvement. The single thing that makes it worthwhile is the ability to control any plugin parameter by hitting the LINK button on the FP2, and then hover the mouse cursor over any plugin control. Then twist the knob. SSL offers this on the UF1, but its $699.
I agree, great comments and insights!!
Is it possible to upload tabs for bass and guitar? I would love to play this!!
Thanks for the interest!! I never actually made any tabs for this unfortunately, although that's a great idea for future!!
Does this work in the later versions of PT? I'm on 2023, followed your instructions, and for some reason, when I load a plugin, it doesn't default to my user settings. The user default shows up under the factory default but I have to select it. It still just loads the factory default Thanks in advance for any help.
Yes! It it supposed to work, however I am also having this same issue in the latest version of pro tools where it doesn't seem to want to keep that going. Not all plugins tho is the strange part, but some. I haven't quite been able to narrow down the issue yet, but it seems like Plugin Alliance is good, but Waves is glitching, not sure what's going on yet, still trying to figure iit out. I'm on Apple Silicon, but using Rosetta mode, not sure if that's the same for you, and what plugins your noticing it doing this
@@ANAKCreates hey man, thanks for the response. I'm not on Silicon in this case, and I'm using SSL's Chanel Strip 2, which isn't working. I just tried it with the BF76 and it worked, so I guess maybe it's a plugin developer issue?
I have a feeling it might be developer based, because I'm finding the same thing. Plugin alliance works, but waves seems to consistantly not work for me. The stock pro tools plugins seem to all work as well.
@@ANAKCreates I tend to agree. I wonder if maybe not all plugin companies actually know about that PT "user default" dealio. Thanks a lot man, appreciate the chit chat!
I'm not sure if they don't know of it's a bug somewhere, because waves used to work, only recently when I moved to Apple Silicon and latest PT did it stop working on some plugins. It worked flawless before, so not quite to sure. I keep trying to reset it just to make sure haha Of course!! Cheers!
can anyone help me i have vocalign project 5 the 14 days try i installed it on mc mini m2 version 13.4 but it says it is incompatible 😢
One thing to try out is see if running logic in Rosetta mode helps this? I know that there's some strangeness with VocAlign and Apple Silicon Native in Logic, it seems very strange, but see if that help??
@@ANAKCreates i going to Check it today if it does work, thank, i Will let you know if It work
Shame. The algorithm doesn't work with this one. Nevermind less people - stronger energy
Thanks for checking it out!!!
Hi there my issue is that In GarageBand for some reason I only have one input showing. When I connect one of the microphones it goes directly to output in audio midi setup and Im not sure how to put it back as an input. One mic works perfectly fine but the other keeps being recognized as a output and im not sure what to do? Its two of the same mics. Could that be a reason? I have seen people connect two of the same mics, just want to be sure before buying another different mic. Any help please I have been going crazy over this!!
When you add the mic, if you try and add it to the aggregate device, can you see the input itself still to be able to check that box off instead? Also, does the first mic increase in inputs when you attach the second, as in is it seeing it as a "stereo" mic now instead of 2 mono mics?? What's strange. What mic is it?? It should work. My other question would be how are you connecting it? Through a hub or different hubs or directly to the computer somehow? I have seen that make a difference as well.
@@ANAKCreates It’s an audio pro microphone but I think the issue is that since it’s the same model and same name, my mac thinks it’s just one microphone instead of 2. Might have to buy a different one instead and connect both to computer
It might be, I think some mics seem to be a bit wierder about that then others, since I know 2 of the Blue Yeti's do work together as I have tried that personally.
Did the Slate ssd5 drums still need a ""DONGLE"" to run with ilok ??...If yes : it is a BUMER... dongle was about the same price as plugin itself...
Yes I believe it does, but believe you can still use ilok and license it on your computer itself, not needing the dongle. Might want to double check if someone else knows this, but I seem to have it working that way. So that would only need the free account and no actual physical dongle!
How does this not have more views?
haha thank you! Appreciate you checking it out!
Thanks man! amazing content
Thank you!! Appreciate that!!
No more subscriptions for me lol
haha totally get it!! Another good Macro program is Keyboard Maestro, it's a one time fee, not as completely intergrated into pro tools, but it does a damn good job and there's a community around creating macros for DAWs as well, worth looking into!
i believe you meant to say that you wanted a "tactile" fader, not a "tactical" fader.
haha good catch!!!! Yes, that's correct!!
Thanks so much for putting this video together! I really liked at the end where you could hear all the different drum VST’s one right after the other. Nice job!
Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it!! Appreciate the feedback! :)
You are very welcome!
where is IK multimedia?
It’s not one Iv been able to test yet! But it looks really cool, hope to get to try it!
Music tooo loud and annoying I stopped watching. Just letting you know. Bye
Thanks for the feedback!!
How do I do this on Windows🙏🙏🙏
It's very similar it just depends the folder that you're looking for, based on which version of pro tools as to which format of plugin, but here are 2 locations that should help (PT 11 and up is AAX 64bit, PT 10 is AAX RTAS and TDM depending on your system, and PT 9 and earlier is RTAS and TDM only) C:\Program Files\Common Files\Digidesign\DAE\Plug-Ins (RTAS & TDM) C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins (AAX) Hope that helps!!
@@ANAKCreates really really thank you friend
The best explained tutorial on how to do this! Thanks! ;) You adress all the issues wit the input channels etc. All the other tutorials don't do that and still get much more views... shame.
Thanks so much!! Glad it was helpful for you!! Appreciate the lovely comment!! :)
hey there, did something happen to your Faceshopping and other reaction videos? I really liked them and I can't find them :(
Hey thanks for the support! I really do appreciate it! <3 I have taken them down at the moment yes, as the channel is pivoting from the kind of content.
very helpful thank you
Awesome!! Glad to hear it!
Actually, I wonder if there is someone who do what I usually do like mix and matching drums from different plugins, sometime I have an idea to layer the kick on this vst to that vst, sometime I do the toms. As you might expect it sounds like very inconvenient 😂 thankfully FL Studio have a built in plugins called Layer, that can play multiple vst's at a time
That's awesome! I didn't know FL had something like that, that's very helpful. I do exactly what you're saying and use multiple at once sometimes haha but I print them into seperate audio tracks so I can make sure they are all in phase and perfect, so while it's annoying to setup sometimes, it's quite easy to use after that
Almost 2 years later, still waiting an update 👀
Thanks so much for having me back on podcast! Loved having this conversation!
